Powered garden tools, chargers and batteries must not go in household rubbish. This page explains how to recycle old equipment when you buy new from Longevity Gardening, and what the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol on our products means.

The crossed-out wheelie bin

Electrical and electronic equipment sold in the UK carries a crossed-out wheelie bin symbol. It means the product must be collected separately from ordinary waste at the end of its life, so that the metals, plastics and electronics can be recovered and hazardous parts dealt with safely. Petrol machinery, cordless tools, chargers and batteries all fall under these rules.

Free take-back when you buy new

When you buy an electrical product from us, you can return an old product of the same type — like for like — to us for recycling, free of charge, within 28 days of your purchase. A new cordless hedge trimmer, for example, entitles you to return an old hedge trimmer, whatever its make.

To arrange it:

• Email orders@longevitygardening.com with your order number and what you would like to return for recycling.
• For items that can be posted, we will tell you where to send them. Our returns address is Unit 6 Ash Road North, Wrexham Industrial Estate, Wrexham, Wales, LL13 9JT, United Kingdom.
• For machinery too large or heavy to post, we will arrange a collection and tell you the arrangements in advance.
• Petrol machinery must be drained of fuel and oil before it is sent or collected, and batteries removed from cordless tools and packed separately.

Batteries

We accept used portable batteries of the kind we sell — the lithium-ion packs used in cordless tools — for recycling free of charge, whether or not you are buying a replacement. Contact us at orders@longevitygardening.com and we will tell you how to send them safely. Never post lithium batteries loose or in ordinary packaging: tape the terminals and use the original or equivalent packaging.

Local recycling

You can also take old electricals and batteries to your local household waste recycling centre free of charge, and many supermarkets and DIY stores have collection points for small electricals and batteries. Your council’s website lists the nearest.

Why it matters

Recovered metals go back into new products, plastics are reprocessed, and batteries — which can start fires in general waste — are handled safely. It is the law for us as a seller, and the right thing to do with a tool that has done its work.
